Synopsis
Cassie Grayson doesn’t know how to be a mom. She’s twenty-two and hardly in a position to care for a kid. But when her twelve-year-old nephew is dumped in her lap, she does the only thing she can: she takes him in. Neither of them have it easy as they try to navigate this unknown path. Cassie must deal with her feelings toward her estranged sister and her own rocky childhood growing up in the foster care system. Felix is still reeling from being uprooted from the only life he’s ever known, and he doesn’t connect with his weird, emotionless aunt. The only person who seems to breach the gap between them is Troy Baker, the counselor assigned to Felix. To Troy, Felix and Cassie should be just another case, but they’re not. Something about the hopeless duo captures his heart, and in spite of his hesitation he finds himself falling for both of them. Felix’s quiet strength is endearing, but it’s Cassie’s determination to not let her nephew down that chips away at his own walls, daring him to more than just help her…but maybe fall in love as well. Can three strangers from completely different worlds create an unlikely family? Or are the hidden holes in their hearts too big to heal?
Review
I received this ARC from author Melissa Pearl in exchange for an honest review...
Fever (Songbird #1) was the first book that I ever read from author Melissa Pearl and the loosely intertwined standalones quickly became one of my favorite addictions. Throughout the years this book has stayed close to my heart and although I have loved every single Songbird novel, Fever was by far by all-time favorite. However, I can no longer say that because Hole Hearted (Songbird #9) has managed to take the number one spot in my heart. Cassie and Troy’s romance was one-of-a-kind (like every Songbird novel) and makes even the strongest doubters believe in soulmates. At the beginning of every Songbird novel, Melissa Pearl includes a Soundtrack list of songs that inspired her while writing the book. Although some prefer to listen to the playlist after reading the book, I always loved listening to it as I read along because you could tell the emotion that was happening during a specific scene in a book. I absolutely love how much the playlist adds to the overall experience of the book. In many ways the playlist for Hole Hearted helped to enhance the emotions portrayed throughout this extraordinary story. Cassie Grayson, a twenty-two year old who grew up a ward of the state is in no position to be a mom, but when her twelve-year-old nephew is in need of a home she must become just that. Both Felix and Cassie struggle to deal with their new situation. Cassie is fighting her demons from the past while Felix is trying to find his place in the world without his mother. Luckily, Troy Baker, a counselor assigned to Felix is slowly helping to bridge the gap between Cassie and Felix. He is a true friend to Felix and the man who will help Cassie face her demons from the past that she has worked hard to bury and learn to fall in love for the first time in her life.
